The Eco Team

Eco Committee are making paper bricks with the help of Mr Muldoon. We have started this process and hope to finish after the Easter holidays. This is an alternative source of energy and ties in with Sustainability. The committee enjoyed ripping up the paper and look forward to finish the process. The committee also hope to get into the flower tubs and Eco garden now the better weather is approaching after the holidays. It needs a good tidy up.

In term 4 with the weather improving planting, weeding and general tidying up of the planters and Eco garden is a necessity. There are many jobs to be done and the garden is rather a mess after the Winter. We hope to get a chance to paint the planters and to use the outdoor classroom  properly for the committee and all the classes. If the Eco Committee don't have time to carry out all these duties a gardening club may have to be organised as an atfer school club. It is amazing the amount of work that needs to be done. Once the Eco bricks are made photos will be published on the website along with our garden maintenance.

Rights Respecting
Rights Respecting School

Our Right Respecting School Committee lead by Primary 5 will be focusing on the rights of all children as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. (UNCRC)
The committees purpose is to ensure that every pupil in Milton understands that they have rights and that when these rights are met, each child can reach their full potential.
It is important that each class create their own class charter which outline their agreed chosen articles (goals) which apply to school life and how they will achieve these.
The committee will create a playground charter which will outline agreed expectations for behaviour and how we can respect each other’s rights in the playground and have a happy time.
Milton’s School Charter (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child)
We have the right to learn (Article 28) and be safe (Article 19) and show respect by doing as asked to let others learn and be safe.

All staff will respect our rights by teaching us and keeping us safe.

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (in child friendly language)

“Rights" are things every child should have or be able to do. All children have the same rights. These rights are listed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Almost every country has agreed to these rights. All the rights are connected to each other, and all are equally important. Sometimes, we have to think about rights in terms of what is the best for children in a situation, and what is critical to life and protection from harm. As we grow, we have more responsibility to make choices and exercise our rights.

Fairtrade

Our Fairtrade Committee is run by Mrs Kerr and Mrs Cherry and have already successfully run their first Fairtrade breakfast week of the term which is always a great social event for the children in the morning. Our local Tesco have again helped in providing some Fairtrade ingredients to help us provide a Fairtrade banana, orange juice and slice of toast for each pupil in their class on a set day in the week. Pupils have been asked for a 50p donation for this which helps the Fairtrade committee raise funds which will be sent to help Fairtrade farmers.

Fairtrade Fortnight in always a great success and the Health Committee liaise closely to help run the breakfast club as well as providing a Fairtrade tuck-shop, fruit pots and smoothies.

Health
Our Health Committee have been focusing on the PE/Active part of our remit to begin with.  The children were horrified at the mess of the gym cupboard and were concerned that we did not have enough quality resources.  We took photographs of the mess to be shared with the school and then set about counting and noting down what resources we had.  We found out that we were lacking in balls for developing our throwing and catching skills so we drafted an email to Mrs James.
During our next meeting we will read the response and take any necessary action.  We will also look into the Sport Scotland Award scheme and look towards registering Milton.
