Term 2

Numeracy
Primary 3 have been working very hard within numeracy and have enjoyed working on addition and subtraction within 100. The children have engaged well with both concepts and are now developing their written skills for subtraction using vertical calculations and bridging within 100. We will then move onto a short block on estimation where we will work on estimations on a number line, estimating to the nearest 10 and estimating quantities to 20.
Primary 3 have also been working on shape, co-ordinates, symmetry and right angles as part of their Maths. They are now focusing on information handling where they are finding information from charts and tables as well as creating their own.
They are working well within their Number Talks block where they have been learning different strategies to support their mental maths such as making tens and friendly numbers to support their addition.

Literacy
Within Literacy we have been working on our spelling programme and a range of common words. Primary 3 have been enjoying using a range of strategies and activities to support them within their spelling and common word practise. The children have been building on transferring their skills through partner dictation, they have engaged well with this and this is an activity we will continue throughout the year.
Within reading, primary 3 have been enjoying their group reading books which are then used for comprehension tasks. They are currently working on the strategy of find it, prove it, talk about it.
Primary 3 have been working well during writing sessions and have completed their block on description. They are now working on their independent writing for our information report block.
In grammar, the children have looked at punctuation, possessive apostrophes and contractions. We are currently focusing on our block about nouns where we will look at common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns.

Health and Wellbeing
Primary 3 have engaged well during Health and Wellbeing sessions where they have been looking at the orange, green, yellow and red cogs. They have shown confidence in linking these cogs to their own personal experiences and will continue to build on this by linking it across areas of the curriculum. They will also look at protective behaviours and road safety.
The children have been enjoying our P.E. sessions where we have covered fun fitness and athletics. They are currently working on ball skills where they are developing their dribbling skills and showing control of the ball using their feet. Primary 3 will be starting a new block of P.E. of hockey where we will focus on grip, safety rules, passing, receiving, dribbling, blocking and spatial awareness.

Across the Curriculum

The children thoroughly enjoyed our topic on Spain where the children learned lots about Spanish culture, music, food, artists, weather and animals. We even had an email all about Spanish life from a family friend in the classroom.
Primary 3 have been very engaged during our French sessions where we have been learning to use some simple greetings to have a conversation in French as well as developing our knowledge on French colours.
The children have worked well during our art block where they have been learning about famous Spanish artists and using their art skills and techniques to recreate some pieces. Primary 3 thoroughly enjoyed recreating their own version of Picasso’s ‘The Weeping Woman’ where they had lots of fun drawing on multiple eyes and ears! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Primary 3 have worked very hard during term 1 and I am sure that this will continue! Well done!

Term 1
It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school after the summer holidays. The children are settling in well to their new classroom and Primary 3 routines. They are working incredibly hard and I am sure this will continue throughout the year. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Numeracy
In numeracy we have just completed a short revision block to go back over the concepts and numeracy areas taught in primary 2. We are moving onto our first block of addition within 100 and will then move to subtraction. We will be working on vertical calculations with exchanging and bridging across tens. Primary 3 will start using Daily 10 each numeracy session to help build and develop our mental maths skills.
In maths we have been learning about the properties of 2D shapes. We will go on to looks at symmetry as well as the properties of 3D shapes. We will also explore ways to help us work out calculations mentally by using our Number Talks strategies.

Literacy
As we are at the beginning of primary 3 we are currently completing a revision block of the taught sounds from primary 2. We will then be moving onto our Stage 3 sounds and common words. Within grammar, we will be revising punctuation before moving onto contractions and using apostrophes to show possession. We will also be working on our handwriting to ensure the letters are appropriately sized and spaced and will start to look at the types of joins used in joined script. The children have started their reading books in class and are enjoying time to read independently and listen to a novel as a class.
In writing we will be focusing on using a describing bubble to help us to write a description. We will continue to develop our reading skills through group reading books and our class novel ‘The Hodgeheg’. We will be exploring comprehension skills to ensure we are able to understand what we have read.

Health and Wellbeing
Our PE days are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that your child has suitable shoes, black shorts and a white t-shirt. Hair should be tied back and no jewellery or earrings should be worn on PE days. If earrings need to stay in, please tape them on PE days. The children will be developing their ball skills such as throwing, catching, rolling, dribbling and bouncing. We will also be working on a ‘Fun Themed Fitness’ block where we will focus on a range of physical and movement skills.
We begin this term by using the UNCRC to explore our rights and create a class charter. Through Emotion Works, we will look at identifying our feelings, what causes how we feel and what we can do to feel better.

Social Studies
In social studies, the children decided as a class that our first topic would focus on the country of Spain. The children have shared what they know and what they would like to find out about Spain. They are excited to learn about Spanish food, landmarks and famous people. They also made a request that we covered some Spanish phrases! ๐Ÿ˜Š
