Primary 5

Welcome to our Primary 5 class page!

We will keep you updated here with everything we are getting up to throughout the year.

Term 2 is always such a busy term in school with lots to look forward to as we head towards December.

Literacy
In literacy we will continue with our spelling programme where we will focus on teaching phonemes, and their different representations, as well as common words. All reading groups have books appropriate for their level which will help the children to focus on their reading fluency. We are coming to the end of our novel Kasper Prince of Cats and will begin a new novel ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, which is full of fun, and we are sure the children will enjoy it. The children will be taught our core reading strategies through our class novel which includes summarising, visualising and inference. This will ensure that the children have a good understanding of what they are reading.

Numeracy and Mathematics
We will continue to explore Number Talks which looks at strategies we can use in order to solve calculations mentally. In maths, the children have completed a topic on shape and have started to look at co-ordinates.  We will then look at translation, angles and negative numbers. In numeracy, we will explore addition by looking at larger numbers and use the standard written method to work out calculations.

HWB
In health we will continue to look at our emotional literacy through our emotion works programme. We will also be looking at the media and advertising and identify the strategies that adverts use in order to influence what we might buy. In PE the children will be enjoying learning about rugby and take part in social dancing.

Term 1
It has been wonderful to welcome the children into Primary 5 and we have enjoyed listening to what they have been up to over the holidays. They have settled in well and are becoming familiar with our daily routines.

Literacy
In spelling we will continue to look at phonemes and common words and focus on using strategies to help us to spell trickier words. In our writing we will focus on creating a descriptive piece before moving onto a narrative text using specific taught structures to help us. In reading we will use the wonderful novel Kasper Prince of Cats to explore the reading comprehension strategies (prior knowledge, main ideas, inference, summarising, metalinguistics and visualisation). This will help the children to deepen their understanding of the novel and allow them to apply their learning to other texts. Each reading group will be issued with a core reader where they will be focussing on improving reading fluency.

Numeracy
In term 1 we will continue to use Number Talks to explore a variety of strategies to help the children become more confident in working out calculations mentally. We will look at the topic of expressions and equations, explore larger numbers through number properties and place value and extend our knowledge of 2D and 3D shape.

Health and Wellbeing
In health we will be reminding ourselves of the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) by creating a class charter. We will continue to look at our Emotion Works programme, which the children are very familiar with, and use our ability to describe thoughts and feelings in other curricular areas.
