Primary 5
Term 1
Children have settled in very well to new class routines in Primary 5. They enjoy working together on their tables and love the active games we play in class.
Within Literacy, Primary 5 have started a whole class novel to gain confidence and talk about all our new reading strategies. Children are working on their personal reading books too and are enjoying the selection of books. We will continue to work on these and introduce other strategies to ensure we gain confidence in this area. Our main writing focus this term, will be descriptive texts and we will be learning about all the features to make our writing successful. We use our ‘Learning Intention’ and work together to create a ‘Success Criteria’ to ensure that we include everything through a checklist and traffic light system. We will also be working on ‘self-assessment’ and ‘peer assessment, through two stars and a wish and will be able to use this to assess our own pieces of writing and our peers.
In Numeracy, we are placing a focus on learning our times tables using different strategies so we can improve our recall facts. We are currently working on time and money. We are using active games daily, to build our confidence in these areas. Primary 5 will move on to place value, addition and subtraction. Children are using their knowledge and skills in ‘Number Talks’, to help us with the mental math sessions, using strategies which help through all areas.
We have commenced our mini topic on ‘Lesmahagow’. We are looking at the history of Lesmahagow and the area of Clydesdale. Primary 5 have shared their knowledge on what they already know about the area we live in. They have also led their own learning, by deciding (as a class) what they want to learn about their local area. We have already commenced work on our assembly and are very excited to share this with you all!
