Welcome to our Primary 5 class page!

We will keep you updated here with everything we are getting up to throughout the year.

Primary 5

Term 2 - Mrs Cherry

Literacy
Primary 5 have been developing reading skills and strategies through the use of their novels and have new novels to focus on during Term 2. Key reading skills being developed include summarising, identifying main ideas of a text, investigating interesting and unknown words and visualisation  of events /characters/places in the text. We are making good progress through our new novels already and I am pleased to see the pupils enjoying the novels.
We continue to have targeted weekly spelling words with a ‘Spell Check’ assessment undertaken on a Friday. Pupils are involved in discussions to ensure they understand the meaning of each word and undertake daily spelling tasks based on their target words.  This is an area in which pupils show wonderful engagement and discussion.

Numeracy
Following a successful block of learning on addition, pupils have moved on to subtraction in large numbers including ‘borrowing’ sums. All pupils are showing understanding of this initially and are enjoying a new focus in numeracy.  Primary 5 will then move onto a block of learning in numeracy based on negative numbers.

Health and Wellbeing
Primary 5 worked well in passing and receiving PE lessons during Term 1. Next the focus will be striking and fielding skills.  P.E lessons continue to be on a Tuesday and a Friday.

Topic
Primary 5 have been learning about life in the 1960’s and 1970’s linked to our 100 year celebrations. We are working hard on our class assembly about these years and look forward to showing this on Friday 22nd of November. We are also about to begin preparations for Christmas crafts and Christmas artwork.

Term 2 - Mrs Black (Thursday and Friday)

This term is always a busy one! The children have enjoyed taking part in the centenary celebrations and they have had the opportunity to learn a lot about the 1960’s and 1970’s during this time. We are very busy at the moment rehearsing for our assembly and are looking forward to performing this very soon. After that, we will be heading into the fun and excitement of Christmas!

Writing
We have been learning how to write an information report. The children have worked as a class, in groups and independently on their writing and are becoming more confident with this. They can tell me about the purpose, structure and language features of an information report. We will go on to look at an exposition text which is a text that tries to persuade its reader by arguing one side of an issue.

Numeracy
We have spent a few weeks exploring our shape topic which goes beyond simple shapes and looks at more complicated shape properties using mature vocabulary. We have looked at co-ordinates and linked that to the translation of shapes. We will go on to explore compass points and negative numbers.
We are continuing to work on Number Talks which shows us a variety of mental strategies. We have worked on addition and are now looking at different subtraction strategies that can help us to work out calculations mentally.

HWB
In health, we have looked at the Emotion Works programme and all the children are familiar with the different cogs and are able to explain what can cause us to feel a certain way and what we can do to help us feel better. We are moving on this term to look at advertising. We will learn about the purpose of advertising and what strategies advertisers use to engage the consumer.
Our PE will continue to be on a Friday. Please ensure that your child has black shorts, leggings or joggers, a plain white t-shirt, suitable training shoes and no jewellery on PE days. Many thanks.
